An ENCARE project titled "Violence, accidents, and injuries experienced by children living in families with alcohol problems (ALC-VIOL)" was started in March 2005. Project's duration is 24 months. The application was put in by the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany (Katholische Fachhochschule Nordrhein-Westfalen).

The project is funded by the European Commission's DAPHNE Programme II, a programme to prevent and combat violence against children, young people and women and to protect victims and groups at risk.

The project ALC-VIOL aims to collect data on domestic violence experienced and witnessed by children affected by parental alcohol problems as well as accidents and injures being frequently associated with it. A total of 500 adolescents (12-18 years of age) will be interviewed about their family situation, experiences with domestic violence, their resources and social support systems. Thus, the data collection focuses on the children's perspectives.

Furthermore, networks of prevention specialists will be established at national level, with the task to develop prevention and information guidelines and strategies. These will be discussed and presented at a multinational symposium which is to be held in Germany in spring 2007.

The first project meeting took place in Cologne, Germany, from 14th until 16th March. The second meeting will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 22nd until 23rd September 2005.

ENCARE-network members involved in the project are: Catholic University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Addiction Research (Austria), Institute Addiction Prevention (Austria), A-Clinic Foundation (Finland), Blue Point Counseling Center & Drug Ambulance (Hungary), Drugs Awareness Programme Crosscare (Ireland), National Commission for the Abuse of Drugs, Alcohol and other Dependencies (Malta), Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology (Poland), Programme on Substance Abuse, Health Department, Government of Catalonia (Spain), Trimbos Institute (The Netherlands), University of Bath (UK).
